It boggles my mind that conservatives have neglected to highlight to black Americans the history of Muslims enslaving Africans for far longer than anyone else. This could help further splinter the Left, which is already losing some of its voter base of black Americans over economic and illegal immigration issues..

Expand full comment

It has always struck me as strange when Blacks convert to Islam, since African slave markets were often run by Muslims.

Expand full comment

It's mainly a prison thing that provides group solidarity and defense against other prison factions. Also, the fact that Africa is mainly Muslim has some attraction.

It just occurs to me that adopting Islam is a way for people to become culturally conservative under the cover of a religious conversion, thus avoiding criticism and alienation from the left, which tends to romanticize anything anti-Western.

Expand full comment

It makes sense that a way of life that is exotic to Americans would attract African Americans, who may never have truly felt at ease in the once-predominant culture. Surely churches provided some sanctuary but Islam is one step removed and has what we understand to be rigid purity codes, unlike the fates of Christian preachers who 'fall' more often than one might be comfortable with.

My observations have been of the number of women who seem drawn to Islam. I think it has a lot to do with no longer being expected to walk the streets like...well, like a street walker.

Expand full comment

Great reply, thanks.

I agree. My sense is that that Islam can fill in for the now-absent influence of the conservative black Baptist churches that once played so large a part in the black American's experience.

I would see this as a positive development were it not for the problems associated with the more militant (that is to say most) Muslims, of the sort we're seeing in England.

What is more amazing is that the American black population continues to vote democrat even with all the democrat history of slavery and to the present with Biden history in his voting record of segregation and busing. In his words “ you ain’t black if you don’t vote for me” how does he get way with that crap?

I agree. Thomas Sowell has been made to carry that particular ball. I can think of no other popular black figure who has a national audience with that sort of reach. Larry Elder is good but hasn't been able to avoid leftist denunciation like Sowell, who has the gravitas of age and multiple degrees. Candace Owens is fantastic but some on the right claim she is a leftist in conservative drag for her former politics, which she has renounced, but there's no appeasing some fanatics who demand ideological purity and consistency. (I have never understood this. Why not welcome converts, especially popular ones?)

Anyway, I sense that the black community (to generalize) is beginning to come around to the decades-long gaslighting by the DP on race and civil rights. This revelation has been largely inspired by the simple realization that life was better for the working class under Trump, even improving. Black people for Trump will be a major factor in November, if he can remain alive or out of prison for that long. They sympathize with his persecution by the political establishment.

Expand full comment

The left has very recently discovered Sowell, and have gone into a spittle-flecked frenzy of denouncing and deboonking him of late. Had to happen, I suppose.

Expand full comment

I find it somewhat encouraging that few other than the ideologically aligned or the chattering class care one way or another about such deboonking and denunciation. The more bad noise the left makes, the less patience normal folks have with them.

The white slavers didn't capture black slaves, they bought them at Muslim Arab slave markets. And white slavery was quite prevalent with the Barbary pirates. In the Marine hymn, the line "...to the shores of Tripoli" refers to one of the new US Marines' first tasks; eliminate the white slaving of the MUSLIM Barbary pirates. And slavery STILL exists in Africa. And it is generally still Muslims enslaving Christians.

unfortunately hate and violence has no special religion, race or culture... it is across the board, a problem for humanity... i will also say hamas was a creation of israel as well.. netanyahu was supportive of it up until very recently... one has to dig below the surface to get a clearer picture of what is happening here..

Expand full comment

So much to unpack.

"netanyahu was supportive of it..." please park your NDS (Netanyahu Derangement Syndrome) to the side. Do not equate tolerance with support - and implying some sort of responsibility of the victim is just sick.

"One has to dig deeper." Really? You espouse some sort of deep understanding. Hamas, it is not that complicated. No enlightenment needed. You suggest hate like Hamas is also on the Israeli side. Not at all. Everyone is not like you or I. The culture of terrorism is evil. Period. No excuses. It is evil to Israelis, Christians, Americans arabs, other muslims, and people in Gaza and America. It is not that complicated.

Expand full comment

This in fact somewhat complicated. Netanyahu did in fact support Hamas as an alternative enemy. Didn’t mean he liked them, just that he thought he could control them better than other opponents. He was obviously wrong. I believe Netanyahu and the Zionists want Gaza, so it really isn’t simple. Innocent Jews suffer from the ambitions of their leaders just as the Palestinians do. Both sides’ leadership wants to wipe the other side completely out. This is imo why it’s so difficult to create a solution. Each side wants total victory.

Expand full comment

It is not that complicated but there are a lot of side-issues. For example, Hamas teaches their young to hate. The Israelis value peace. Hamas cannot accept non jihadists and discent. Israel includes 1 million arab israelis and teaches peace. It traded the Sinai penensula for peace with Egypt. And they have good relations with Jordan and other arab countries. Even if not publicly. Saying it is complicated is a bit of a cop-out. The future of the middle east is with those who want peace and prosperity. Hamas is the enemy of everyone against Islamic jihad and extremism, including arabs, not just Israel. It is good vs evil at the end of the day. Which is simple, although, at the same time, a very difficult thing to understand for many in the Western world.

This is the cost of war. Yes, innocents are dying, but the blame is on the terrorists you're shielding from scrutiny, not the IDF.

Zionists can't steal a land they're indigenous to. Many of the Arabs in Gaza were migrants from Egypt that settled there long after (as late at 1940s) Jews started resettling in their homeland, often by purchasing land from the Arabs. Hamas's charter literally says Israel will exist until Islam eliminates it, so stop pretending this is a political issue. 70% of Palestinians approve of Hamas so don't tell me they don't know about this. The reason the Arab Muslims hate the Jews is because the Jews are their unfinished business. Islamists have deleted entire civilizations from the time of their prophet because the others didn't believe in their God. The Palestinian Islamists are no different than ISIS, Boko Haram, Al Quaeda, Jamaat e Islami, or any of the other bigots that came before them.

N.S. Lyons' Substack has a free - for - the reading analysis of exactly how October 7 could have happened.

It was not a false flag. It was that Israel's border security was too complex, not too lax. Hamas must be given credit for the ingenuity it brought to realizing this, and to coming to grasp how foiling the system could be done rather simply.

I'm fully serious when I say that I admire it as a feat of war, though at a moral level, I'm made uncomfortable by that admiration. I suppose it's an example of giving the Devil his due.

Expand full comment

This is not true. It is Hamas propaganda. A statistician analyzed their data and found it was not true. For example, the number of deaths in Gaza claimed to be caused by Israel was the same for each of the days in the first month after the Hamas terrorist attack. That is impossible.

Another example, there is no correlation between the number of deaths of women in the Hamas reports and the number of deaths of children. That cannot be true.

Israel is not trying to force anyone out of Gaza except the terrorist organization Hamas. Getting rid of Hamas will liberate the people of Gaza from the terrible problems they now have. Hamas places all its military and war equipment in apartment buildings and hospitals, endangering the lives of the civilians. Israel's military notifies the civilians when an attack on the Hamas military is planned.

Finally, and most importantly, Israel is not trying to eliminate Muslims or Arabs. There are more than a million Muslims who are citizens of Israel, with full rights. So they are not in any way committing genocide. But Hamas and the other Iran-controlled terrorist groups want to get rid of the Jewish people, which is genocide. The slogan they have "From the river to the sea" is exactly genocide.

Men at war can be driven to all sorts of extremities, but no honest person has ever believed that Israel wanted to wipe out "the Palestinians." You no doubt consider it ridiculous, but whether you do or not, the land was given to them by God.

Even if I believed that it wasn't, I would still support Israel if only because of its achievements with the land. There was nothing in the way of a government or an economy or even a country of the Arab imagination when the Jews of Europe got back there. They took the desert and made it bloom. They made a country.

Here's one observation, which I make delicately: there have been more than a few Israeli Nobel laureates. Has there ever been an Arab laureate?

Israel is America's foremost ally in the world, and you must live in denial if you believe otherwise. You may have noticed that the Israelis were helped by the Saudis and the Jordanians in foiling the Iranian strike of a couple of weeks ago. Why do you think that was? That war that you're so afraid will happen would be far likelier to happen if Israel failed to do what it needs to do in Gaza.

Hamas and Hezbollah are Iranian tools. It's Iran that funds Islamic terrorism. Do you think the Iranians want nuclear weapons to defend against the possibility of an Israeli nuclear strike?

Additionally, what's the student and faculty sentiment at these colleges from people who aren't protesting? do they feel that their campus has been usurped? I'd be pissed if my commencement was shut down, or if I was told I couldn't go to class because the college couldn't put some boundaries up against students who were being a nuisance. I think it's gone past legitimate based on what I've seen.. now it's more along the lines of provocation.

100% Since the 1960s, college demonstrations have become a sort of rite of passage and a way to display publicly one's moral rectitude ("virtue signalling"). I would not be surprised if the contemporary breed of activist critical studies or political science professor offers "course credit" for participation.

"Making your voice heard" does not "scale" as Elon Musk might say. After a while it becomes noise, especially when taking social media into consideration.

While I have no doubt some of the demonstrators are genuinely moved by some moral outrage to take to the streets, and extremely large, nonviolent demonstrations can have some impact on governmental policy, by and large it is virtue signaling.

It's beyond leftists "condemning genocide". It's creating a nuisance in colleges and disrupting the places where students have come to focus on their studies, while paying lots of money to do so. Any other group doing so would be ushered away immediately.

To any sane person, yes.. it is a double standard! But it's allowed and permissible under the most-high tenants of intersectionality, as we've seen with these Ivy league schools. Where the worshipers of identity politics gather to enshrine their sacred beliefs and bestow upon each other an unshakable identity of righteous victimhood.. the cost to entry is race and class suicide.. and if you are white, there's double penance due at the gates.

It's all part of the Marxist masterplan to destroy the U.S. Constitution and replace it with totalitarian rule.

The question is whether the Marxist faction of this - and I agree there is one, but not everyone is hardcore because socialism is always fashionable among the young - whether the hardcore Marxists can use these protests to leverage themselves into power. That’s what they really want. But they don’t have the numbers. The Marxist wannabes also need an elite faction willing to back them. They’ve got Soros and the globalists, but those guys are playing their own game. Obama and his minions love power, but they prefer to operate in the shadows and pull the strings off stage. Biden is beholden to powerbrokers behind the scenes too, many of who are Jewish. So he has to support Israel but pretend he cares about Gaza for the youth vote. And even with cheating, he still needs votes to make it look legit. To me it looks like the Dems are in a pickle. But their secret weapon is the willingness to do just about anything to keep the current arrangements intact. Another wedge for them is when the campus radicals figure out that old Joe the greasy pol isn’t going to take them where they want to go.

There are Marxists, Marxist supporters and Marxist dupes. That covers just about everyone on the Left today except for a few classically liberal Democrats.

Marxism is now identitarian and corporatist.

Marxism keeps changing to adapt to the current society. Karl Marx advocated doing so in "The Communist Manifesto."

Yes, and the goal is always revolution and dictatorship.

Much of Gov. DeSantis' success is that his admin.'s policies and consistent practices have demoralized the Left - they hardly bother to attempt to establish campus protests. He is not obliged to react, but merely to remind everyone of consequences.

They believe him.

So, Gov. Abbot bulldozed the protests on UT's campus and instead of claiming it was for law and order, he claimed that antisemitism won't be tolerated in Texas. Given that the protection of the right of free speech is the Right's responsibility at this point, Abbot stepped on a rake. Still, he basically did what you prescribe above and it might benefit the Right as a contrast to what people are seeing and hearing from Columbia, NYU, etc. where real antisemitism is on continual and full display.

If the right does anything, and it is helpful, it will be luck, not competence.

Too bad it is so difficult to get the Right to do anything this clever--or so likely to work!

It has been attributed to Winston Churchill that, "If you are in your twenties and are not a liberal, you have no heart. If you are in your fifties and are not a conservative, you have no brain." These children are so gullible, so indoctrinated by Marxist (therefore brainless) teachers and professors - some of whom are barely out of their twenties themselves, and were indoctrinated in their teacher's colleges and liberal universities. Few have ever been taught logic, critical analysis, the scientific method, how to think for themselves rather than swallow the emotional, illogical cant of those who have (gag me)"educated" them. Unfortunately, the Left (especially the far-Left which the Biden/Obama regime is following, insisting upon supporting, to our detriment) finds such ignorance and immaturity so useful that they work very hard to keep them in that state.

In the sixties (yes, I was of age at that time), mostly foreign Marxist agitators fired up young college students into rioting and taking over campuses. Now, we have our own home-grown Marxists who openly fire up and make ignorant rabble of our young. That simply must change.

Why are these clowns teaching in universities in the first place? Where is the pons asinorum that once excluded those incapable of rational thought?

The long march through the institutions. If you've never seen that term, check it out. It has been proceeding quietly since the 1960s. Now, they run things.

Don't make the pointless quest for responsible, civilized adults on university faculties.

Because socialism is sold as a compassionate system. The system that cares about the poor etc. in practice it doesn’t work out this way, but we don’t have professors teaching reality, only theory. But the main point that conservatives have got to grasp is that the left, and the democrats by extension, are assumed to be the “caring” ones. Steal that from them and the young will follow.

Democrats prefer to use other people's money (usually not even their own) to solve what they see as problems. Conservatives use our own money in donations and assistance, preferring that over being forced by the state to let them use our money to FAIL to solve the problem.

Socialism has always been an unworkable farce, the same as it's fraternal twin, communism, and deranged brother, fascism.
