This in fact somewhat complicated. Netanyahu did in fact support Hamas as an alternative enemy. Didn’t mean he liked them, just that he thought he could control them better than other opponents. He was obviously wrong. I believe Netanyahu and the Zionists want Gaza, so it really isn’t simple. Innocent Jews suffer from the ambitions of their leaders just as the Palestinians do. Both sides’ leadership wants to wipe the other side completely out. This is imo why it’s so difficult to create a solution. Each side wants total victory.
It is not that complicated but there are a lot of side-issues. For example, Hamas teaches their young to hate. The Israelis value peace. Hamas cannot accept non jihadists and discent. Israel includes 1 million arab israelis and teaches peace. It traded the Sinai penensula for peace with Egypt. And they have good relations with Jordan and other arab countries. Even if not publicly. Saying it is complicated is a bit of a cop-out. The future of the middle east is with those who want peace and prosperity. Hamas is the enemy of everyone against Islamic jihad and extremism, including arabs, not just Israel. It is good vs evil at the end of the day. Which is simple, although, at the same time, a very difficult thing to understand for many in the Western world.
