But such a clusterfuck, such a "perfect storm" driven by greed, "perverse incentives" -- and in more than one sense (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perverse_incentive), ignorance, pigheadedness, vanity, envy, and a pervasive scientific illiteracy.

Big part of the problem, particularly relative to that scientific illiteracy, is that most people seem not to realize that -- as that Oxford Dictionary entry emphasizes -- the sexes are just categories, are not any sort of "immutable identity". And as categories, there's the question of exactly what are the criteria of membership, what are the "membership dues".
