During the Biden administration there was tremendous stress and anxiety as the "team" went further and further to the "left," and as we saw him failing as man. The endless lies from the MSM added to the burden. Dylan Mulvaney has come to typify the era.

Today, the country's mood has relaxed. The new democrats are obviously more Marxist than ever and are marginalizing themselves. The Trump team has been as absolutely transparent as it has been practical. Trump, although old, is obviously vigorous. The constant barrage from the MSM is taken for granted and, largely, ignored. They cannot get their footing not even with the "Epstein Files." Gavin Newsom, Walz, Pritzker and Schumer are beclowning themselves daily; it is rather amusing to watch. The declassification of documents that never should have been classified making evident the conspiracy that was the Russia hoax, invented by Hillary Clinton's team, is a relief. We all knew intuitively what had happened, now we know it factually. It would be good to see indictments, prosecutions and punishments, but no one is counting on it. The tariffs have not broken our economy; they are a good negotiating tool, and the working class are seeing their wages increase. The nuclear sites in Iran were bombed, which is comforting. X, thanks to Elon Musk, remains free and is a source of uncurated information. Western Europe appear to be on a downhill slide, but I don't live there. All-in-all, if a genie popped out of a lamp today and asked me for my wish, I'd probably just ask for a cold Pepsi Zero and let it go with that.

I view the next level of impact to move beyond polls, policies and schools, to the home. While much of the turmoil has centered around Trump’s victory, his aggressive policies and shifting schools from liberal brain-washing to fundamental education, the foundation of these efforts falls back to the hardest work; parenting. Whether it is the issue of parents’ responsibility for their children’s actions, or the onus of structure critical to sound development, parents have to bear the weight of our youth’s success. The elephant in the family room, is us. Many have parsed parental responsibility to teachers, to coaches or completely relinquished ownership to unnamed, on-line players. Abdicating ownership of our children, is at the base of many societal problems - be they educational, behavioral or broadly societal. Leading by example is hard. Demonstrating habits in working, practicing a religion, valuing family, requiring academic focus, emphasizing exercise and appreciating our country, are all fundamental to raising healthy, functional children, who feel confident in their path and capable of success. Imparting confidence takes many steps, beginning early with structure, diet and attention. Investing in their education, requires more than dropping kids off at school; we are their best teachers. Prioritizing analog interaction is challenging; the screens are ubiquitous and call loudly for attention. We are seeing the pernicious effects of on-line time, social media and video games, already. The deleterious impact of digital focus is most grotesquely amplified, in the spike in teen depression and sadly, instances of suicides. We limit screen time on school nights - not the coolest move, I know - as well as TV. While this may appear draconian, the kids adapted to it and, as a result, were able to focus their attention on school work, exercise and reading books. Yes, the actual things with pages in them. I am happy to report that, as a result of these efforts, both children are solid kids, excellent students and good athletes. Social media is peripheral, not a driver of their lives. Raising good kids is hard, but necessary. We all have to sacrifice some of our time, energy and effort to provide the basis for their lives. If we don’t, all the elected officials, policy changes and karate instructors in the world will not make the difference. We have to invest heavily in our children. Shy of that investment, I fear that future elections will be held by unhappy, insecure and poorly educated citizens and they are likely to fall prey to blaming others, wanting more government support and all of the negative consequences that come with these false gods. One man’s opinion. Back to working on mine; good luck with yours.

Agreed. Additionally, unless K-12 education is de-woked, the wokeism will continue to re-emerge with every generation of high school graduates. Teachers' unions are deeply infested with the woke ideology and hold tremendous power. In my opinion, dismantling of Department of Education is a mistake, sending the funds back to the blue states where they will be funneled directly into more of the woke programs is dangerous. Instead, they need to clean the DoE from the woke ideology, as hard as it is, and re-orient it towards focus on STEM and American values.

Ronald Reagan was a great president and policy maker. The only thing he did that I disagree with is closing mental institutions! We need to address mental health - many, if not most, on the streets are mentally unstable.

Expand full comment
Lydia Lozano's avatar

Oh geez. How did he close the mental institutions if they were all run by the states? They were historically state run, going back to the 19th century. They never received federal funding and Reagan did not have the authority to close them. He kept the only federal mental hospital, St. Elizabeth's, open. The states closed the majority of the "insane asylums" at the urging of mental health "professionals," and state legislatures were more than happy to offload the expense. It was Jimmy Carter who championed the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980 (MHSA), which provided grants to community mental health centers that were supposed to replace the mental institutions, but were a flawed concept from the beginning because many psychiatric patents need to be in secure facilities. We need to have both kinds of treatment available. What Reagan WAS responsible for is repealing the MHSA. Congress could have reinstated it and funded it at any time. The remaining state institutions are constrained because federal rules prohibit any facility from participating in Medicaid if they have more than 17 psychiatric beds, hence states have to provide most of the funding.

What about President Reagan signing into law the NCVIA?

“The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 was signed into law by United States President Ronald Reagan as part of a larger health bill on November 14, 1986. NCVIA's purpose was to eliminate the potential financial liability of vaccine manufacturers due to vaccine injury claims to ensure a stable market supply of vaccines, and to provide cost-effective arbitration for vaccine injury claims.” (Wikipedia)

This is a positive take on where things are heading....and I would very much like to share in its confidence. Yes the tectonic plates have certainly shifted in the US. But the rest of the West is a different story. And even in America there are arguably two kinds of false dawns swirling round in right-wing media.....

"The first is the Woke is So Over! meme. Somehow the tens of millions of laptop culture warriors, including those sitting at all levels of the West’s civil service and bureaucracies, never got the message. Tell it to the ‘creatives’ in the multi-billion dollar TV advertising industry, I say.

The second kind is a narrative where everything gets blamed on a so-called ‘Woke elite’. This is a malign elite who (so we are told) have been ‘in control’ of it all. A kind of Wokievellian Illuminati. In this telling of our 21st Century hyper-progressive dystopia, Woke reality has simply been foisted on a great mass of grounded and well-adjusted citizenry. Yes, they have put up with it, but entirely unwillingly. Hence the proposed answer to the problem is for this ‘Woke elite’ to be vanquished by new swashbuckling Trump-type administrations in order to Make Everything Great Again. There’s one big failure in this narrative. By implication, the US Democratic Party ought, for example, to have attracted around 5 per cent of the popular vote last November, not the near-50 per cent it actually got." https://grahamcunningham.substack.com/p/everyone-has-lost-control-of-the

That loss created a crumble that has turned into an avalanche.

What do you think Trump's electoral margin would be if the election was today?? Methinks overwhelming.

Trump didn’t have much competition. He should have trounced the lackluster Kamala Harris, but he didn’t, even with Hannity lying about her platform. And if Trump ran today against Kamala, he would not have the support of young black males – Trump failed to warn them of his plans to nuke DEI; many of their mothers and wives lost their good middle class jobs through DEI annihilation.

Trump got lucky.

We can disagree, but I think you're not thinking straight.

Trump's win was a sign, like when the attendees at the superbowl ignoring the mask mandate. These sorts of things are just signs to allow the majority to operate freely.

Indicators that the the culture has changed. It's the middle of the process, not the beginning.

Can the culture change again and do I think there will be a backlash? Of course, but if Covid flared up again, do you think we'd shutdown and mask up again?

Again, we may disagree on this. All of the dems were weakened by the Biden Presidency and the cultural overreach of that crowd.

Are you thinking that the basic platform would change? I think not. So one dem would have just as much trouble swimming against a tide.

Your point about woke being far more widespread than the Right wants to believe is very important. We can argue about why that is. But the traditional Right-wing answer, "people are just afraid of the woke lunatics who run the show" is belied (as you say) by the Democratic Party's performance in 2024.

I've long said that wokeness fills a necessary hole in the modern West. It answers the question "what is good and evil?" It makes normative claims and freely uses power to defend them. Since Nietzsche declared God and His standards of morality dead and Mill declared the use of power for normative purposes verboten... we've struggled not only in defining a collective definition of "good" and "evil, but even debating whether we should.

Everyone knows this is untenable; a society that agrees on nothing except "do as thou wilt" can not remain stable. And ours is not. Wokeness is an illiberal, left-wing answer to this problem or defining a moral order. We're still looking for the illiberal, right-wing version.
