I have friends, decent, intelligent people, who see all of it and still, come election, will vote for the same Democratic morons who have ruined civilized life in "The City" and other cities in the most beautiful state in the Union. Considering CA's lax laws regarding sex with minors, it's rather amazing any convicted pedophiles exist in the state.
Most of the nation has no idea, that sex with a minor within 7 years of your age is a misdemeanor in CA. Nor do they realize that an 11 year old sex traffickinng victim, can be waltzed into a hospital for an abortion by her pimp, and as long as she "consents" to the procedure, any healthcare professional that dares contact her parents risks losing their medical license.
The list of insanity is longer, but surely a picture should be forming. There are far better places to be a child than the Golden State.
I live in MPLS and am pretty much The Token White Guy in the neighborhood. 1 block away there is a halfway house for sexual offenders. Something I've noticed, Houses like this are never put in "Nicer Neighborhoods", always in areas like this.

This needs to be an even longer, deeper piece of reportage. Why are sex offenders getting free housing, and for how long? Aside from the woo-woo described here, what support are they receiving to get jobs and live harm-free lives? Who supervises this apparent pastiche of models for "re-entry"? And most importantly, have there been any documented cases of recidivism with children in areas proximate to their subsidized housing? If not, then "advocates" will seize upon this as evidence of their better angels being trustworthy--even if they're downloading kiddie porn up in their room or (shudder) leering at the family across the street. The mom who reported that gave a good quote/anecdote, but more shoeleather is needed to build the case for menacing behavior in the vicinity of these facilities. Good luck!
Voters who support, elect, and re-elect administrations that facilitate arrangements like these are criminals too. "Did you vote for the people who did this?" Why don't we ever see this line in campaign ads?
As long as residents in the affected areas continue to accept lower standards and the heightened risks to their children nothing will change. As a nation we have normalized so much aberrant behavior that situations like this continue unheeded.

Thank you for bringing awareness to this problem: it isn't just in SF. I've seen it in Oakland, also. Rental property owners with multi-family housing in low income areas with a lot of dysfunction in their neighborhoods: vandalism, homeless encampments, drug dealers, drug addicts, etc. Difficult for landlords to get responsible, qualified tenants. For rental operators in these neighborhoods (a vast area of Oakland), the choice is between looking for a needle in a haystack (the qualified responsible tenant who wants to live in the middle of a homeless-and-drug infested neighborhood) while also dealing with punitive rent control and tenant protections (eviction costs begin at $20K); or participating with a housing program that subsidizes the rent. No one wants Section 8 due to the problems that can arise with those tenants and the $20K to start eviction costs. The "dodgy" owners opt for sex offenders and I know of one apt house that is 2 blocks from an elem. school. The sex offenders' rent is subsidized (taxpayer paid for); the owner receives market rent (exempt from rent control) from the housing non-profit that runs the program. When neighbors find out their next door apt houses have sex offenders, single women move away and families move away. That empties out the last vestiges of what constitutes a viable community, and these creeps get their housing paid for. Thank you for another great article.
There was a sex offender sent to live in Lockwood California in a trailer in an area in this tiny town. I helped send letters to get him removed with a group that protests this placement. After a few weeks the residents of Lockwood told us to stop because they ,"felt sorry for him". As a Psych RN, I think they should be housed in a building close to the prison they were released from. This would be kinder to them and not keep them isolated. To my knowledge, there is no rehab for this that works.

I agree. but Judges say there is no community that will accept them. The law needs to be changed.
